"With a Little Help From Friends" Peer Support & Advice
Peer Support & Advice At Umbrella Lane, many of our volunteers are sex workers either currently or very recently. We come with a variety of experiences, across genders, migrant status, age, disabilities, management of drug use, violence. Whilst we do not claim to be experts on all things, we believe that personal experience is the foundation of being a good listener and providing a non-judgemental ear and advice to any issue you may face in your work or life. If you'd like to meet for a chat with a peer volunteer around a specific issue, regarding health, social support, emotional well-being, parenthood, childhood, gender identity, issues with clients, issues with partners etc we can meet you at our offices or in a place comfortable to you.
Supported Referrals Through our time developing our organisation, we have got to know a number of supportive agencies who will not judge in their approach. If there is a specific issue you are facing that peer support may not be enough for, we will help put you in touch with these agencies and support you in whatever way you wish in following through this path.
Safety Tips for New Workers Whilst we cannot provide direct support in starting sex work, we want to make sure if you have recently started sex work, that you know how to keep as safe as possible. We can provide advice to new workers on the legal framework in Scotland, safety measures you should put in place, support organisations, and ways to protect your health.
Peer-led Workshops & Trainings Occasionally we organise peer-led workshops and trainings on a range of issues, including safety, mental health, looking after your self while working, dealing with stigma, and more fun skill-based workshops, like massage, film-making and creative writing. These workshops and trainings are usually advertised on our social media pages so keep an eye out on Twitter and Facebook.
